DICE LA NUESTRA NOVIA:
SEPHARDIC BALLADS AND WEDDING SONGS FROM MOROCCO AND TURKEY
Ballads and wedding songs have been important vehicles of cultural affirmation for the Sephardic communities of the Mediterranean because in them the faith, tradition, and language of their Spanish ancestors are encapsulated. Furthermore, these pieces are authentic cultural microcosms because they have developed out of the music traditions of those countries where these exiled communities settled.
In the program Dice la nuestra novia, the group Adufera explores the differences that exist between Sephardic ballads and wedding songs from two opposite shores of the Mediterranean: Morocco and Turkey. The Sephardic compositions, reconstructed through the field work of important ethnomusicologists, are performed along classical and traditional pieces from these countries with the purpose of placing them in an appropriate musical and cultural context.
